Are you bothered by stubborn diet and exercise resistant fat, a sagging, deflated behind or cellulite? Have you wanted to undergo cosmetic enhancement here at ASC but never seem to have the free time?

Instead of taking a traditional vacation this summer, we invite you to consider the pros of a beauty staycation.

Many professions allow vacation time over summer months and this is the perfect opportunity to undergo cosmetic surgery in Denver at Aguirre Specialty Care.

Dr. Aguirre routinely performs popular body contouring procedures such as VASER® Liposuction, Brazilian Butt Augmentation, SmartLipo®, VASER® Smooth Cellulite Reduction and ASC Abdominoplasty over summer months because that is the only time many men and women can fit it into their busy schedules.

Due to the fact that you are engaging in limited physical activity and able to rest, the body can heal itself without interruption. Furthermore, Dr. Aguirre is proud to offer many advanced body contouring options that are minimally invasive and pose less downtime than traditional methods.

VASER® Liposuction, for instance, has far less downtime than traditional liposuction because it is performed under local anesthesia at our Denver office and uses state-of-the-art ultrasound technology designed to gently reshape the body.

For those who have struggled with poor self-confidence due to problem areas like love handles, tummy pooch and saddlebags, a staycation often wins out over a vacation. While a vacation ends, a staycation is just the beginning of a body you’ll love for years to come!

Schedule your beauty staycation consultation at Aguirre Specialty Care and emerge from your summer time off rested, jet lag free and ready to put your best self forward!

Dr. Aguirre Answers: Is It Possible to Prevent Cellulite?

No matter what you call it — lumps, bumps, “cottage cheese” or “orange-peel” skin – cellulite can appear on even the fittest bodies. In fact, it shows up on about 90 percent of all women. When dimpled thighs are staring back at you in the mirror, it’s hard not to wonder: Can cellulite be prevented — or better yet — cured?

For starters, the appearance of cellulite is linked to genetics. This means if your mother has it, you probably will too. It is also a burden that women carry far more than men. For women, the connective tissues surrounding fat cells run vertically, which creates a “bulging” of fat cells, resulting in a “puckered” look.

Of course, keeping fit, eating healthy and maintaining good skin tone help to minimize the appearance of cellulite. In addition, though, technology is finally catching up with demand and offering some solutions that produce true visible results.

Here at Aguirre Specialty Care, we offer VaserSmooth, an ultrasonic treatment that literally breaks up the structures beneath the skin that cause the puckering appearance of cellulite. Response to this treatment so far has been great, with visible results that are long-lasting.

According to a study published in the August 2012 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, fat cells neither return to treated areas nor get redistributed to untreated areas of the body after liposuction. This new study clarifies a report published last year in Obesity, which initiated a controversy by saying fat returned to untreated areas of the body, especially the abdomen, shoulders, and arms, within one year after liposuction in patients who gained weight.

The new study, published by the ASPS, evaluated 301 patients who had liposuction, either alone or in combination with abdominoplasty. The study revealed no evidence of fat regrowth in treated areas of the arms, abdomen, or lower body; upper body dimensions were unchanged after surgery, indicating no fat redistribution.

Said study author Eric Swanson, MD, “Our study included a sufficient number of patients and used precise measurements, making the conclusions highly reliable. Patients can be reassured that their improvements will last and they need not worry about putting weight back on disproportionately.”

According to Dr. Aguirre, it’s important to remember that liposuction does not change your ability to gain or lose weight. Rather, it permanently reduces the number of fat cells in the problem areas that are treated. For any given weight you will be in the future, your proportions will be better after liposuction, barring extremes in weight gain, of course.

In a recent interview, Dr. Aguirre sat down with Wellness Hour host Randy Alvarez to discuss liposuction. Dr. Aguirre said he performs this procedure using either Smartlipo™, which is laser liposuction, or VASER® Lipo, which uses ultrasound. He said there are a number of advantages to using these new technologies over the older, traditional liposuction.

Both Smartlipo and VASER Lipo liquefy the fat cells, breaking them up so that the fat can be extracted through much smaller tubes, called cannulas. This means that the end result of liposuction is much less “bumpy” than used to be seen with traditional liposuction. What’s more, Smartlipo and VASER are both performed using local anesthesia. This has a number of advantages. Recovery time is much quicker than with general anesthesia, and the local anesthesia means that there are none of the safety risks associated with general anesthesia. Perhaps best of all, the patient is awake with Smartlipo and VASER. Patients can be moved, and even stand up for repositioning, according to Dr. Aguirre. They can also provide feedback.

Dr. Aguirre also has special training in a technique called Hi Def Liposuction. This method describes the approach he takes in sculpting the patient’s body for attractive and natural-looking results. Said Dr. Aguirre, “It’s making the appearance of someone being very fit. And the majority of my patients are already very fit. They don’t just want a flat tummy, they want a tummy that’s flat and looks athletic. That’s the idea of adding the high def liposuction. It’s to make the results look more natural.”

Randy Alvarez asked Dr. Aguirre about some popular body areas for liposuction. The first they discussed was the neck area. Dr. Aguirre described it as a “wonderful area to treat” because the results can be so striking. He said this is because, “It’s the first area people look at because it is part of the face.” Because the neck area is small, the procedure takes less than an hour and as little as 30 minutes for some patients, but the results can be quite dramatic. Dr. Aguirre said that he sees as many men as women for neck liposuction. “I have patients bring in their husbands or boyfriends to do neck liposuction. It is very popular among spouses,” he said, adding, “In some patients it takes five or ten years off their look.”

Dr. Aguirre said he sees a wide age range of patients for liposuction, from people in their 20’s all the way up to their 70’s. He said the most popular areas for liposuction are the abdomen and thighs. In fact he said the legs are “a fun area to treat, because it empowers these patients and even improves their quality of life.”

The host stated that a number of doctors confide that they dislike doing liposuction because they consider it tedious. Dr. Aguirre said he feels quite differently. “What I like about lipo is it brings out the artistic side of me. And beyond that, the patients really love the results. It’s one of the most gratifying things I do. … If you have a young woman who’s always had saddlebags, and then you address the issue with a procedure that takes less than two hours and has an easy recovery, when they come back smiling about their new figure, that’s very rewarding.”

Dr. Aguirre was a recent guest of cable TV’s, The Wellness Hour, hosted by Randy Alvarez. While the topic of the segment was “Liposuction,” Dr. Aguirre and the host spent a fair amount of time exploring Dr. Aguirre’s unique combination of services for patients which range from urogynecology to cosmetic gynecology to cosmetic procedures such as liposuction.

According to Dr. Aguirre, the types of procedures he offers at Aguirre Specialty Care grew in a natural progression from his original focus on helping women address functional urogynecological or cosmetic gynecological concerns. Dr. Aguirre’s first requests for liposuction came from women looking to improve the appearance of their pubic mons area. Since this procedure required the removal of fat, liposuction was the way to address it. “The first area of interest I had was doing the pubic mons. That’s what led me to look into this. They were coming in to consult with me about their pelvic concerns and were pointing to an area with excess fat. The only way to do that is with liposuction,” said Dr. Aguirre.

Randy Alvarez asked Dr. Aguirre, “So you think [performing liposuction] is your role?” “If patients trust me with their vaginal repairs and their bladder lifts, they have no hesitation in wanting me to do their liposuction,” said Dr. Aguirre. Dr. Aguirre uses either Smartlipo, (laser lipo), or VASER® Lipo (ultrasound liposuction).

Dr. Aguirre said that many patients come to him for urogynecological issues such as incontinence, but then will also plan to have a cosmetic procedure such as liposuction, either with overlapping recovery time or at a later date. “In fact,” said Dr. Aguirre, “20 percent of my patients get some additional procedure in addition to their incontinence procedure. So they may have a labiaplasty, they may have vaginal tightening, and more and more of these patients are now wanting lipo.”

While patients often plan liposuction at the same time as a urogynecological or cosmetic gynecological procedure, Dr. Aguirre said that the procedures are usually not done on the same day. Typically, the liposuction will be done a week or so before. This is because liposuction can be done in office at Aguirre Specialty Care, while the other procedures will require a surgical suite at the hospital. “It is expensive to bring liposuction into the operating room,” said Dr. Aguirre, who added that the most important reason for keeping the procedures separate is lower fees for his patients.

Dr. Aguirre said a former bladder surgery patient returned a year later for liposuction. When asked why she chose Dr. Aguirre, she replied, “You operated on my bladder a year ago. I trust you more than anyone.”

That makes a lot of sense considering it’s one of the most if not the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the United States today. You may know it as liposuction, liposculpture, ultrasonic liposuction, lipoplasty, laser liposuction, lipectomy, tumescent liposuction, or just plain fat removal. “But wait, what was that last one…” you’re thinking to yourself, “…before fat removal?” You’re wondering what tumescent liposuction is.

Tumescent liposuction involves a technique were the liposuction procedure can be done under local anesthesia while a patient is actually awake and overall decreases all the cause for concern commonly associated with liposuction such as hospital stays, general anesthesia complications and lengthy recovery times. The tumescent liposuction technique uses large volumes of very dilute solutions of local anesthesia that is gently injected into subcutaneous fat.

The originator of this particular technique is Dr. Jeffrey Klein, who came up with the idea in the mid 1980’s after attending a liposuction course where only general anesthesia was used. His discovery changed the way many think about liposuction in terms of safety and recoveries, making the procedure itself seem much less intimidating. If you were considering liposuction but had reservations due to the traditional liposuction concerns, tumescent lipo may be just the thing.

Whether you’ve lost five pounds or twenty pounds with the help of liposuction, here are some tips and strategies for keeping the weight off for the long-term:

1. Small Meals More Often: Eating nutritious meals throughout the day will keep your energy levels stable and reduces the risk of overeating at the next meal. Spreading out your food over the course of the day also ensures that you digest and absorb all of the calories efficiently, so you’re less likely to feel deprived or reach a state of starvation – the precursors of a ‘binge’ – on any given day.

2. Make H20 a Habit: Water helps flush out the toxins in the body and can even keep hunger pangs at bay. Experts say it can also help with digestion, which can keep your metabolism running at peak performance.

3. Take a Low and Lean Approach to Your Diet: Low-fat meals and lean protein snacks are healthy food choices that can ward off the pounds. Consider adding turkey, skim milk, lowfat yogurt and fat-free snacks (in moderation) to your daily diet so that you’re filling up on foods that won’t trigger a weight gain cycle.

4. Remember to Exercise: Regular exercise can help you look and feel great, and can also be an effective weight loss strategy. Squeezing in just 20-30 minutes of walking each day can give your metabolism a boost, burn a few extra calories and keep your appetite under control.

5. Cut Down On The Carbs: Whole grains, fruits and vegetables are the healthiest sources of carbohydrates that can keep your blood sugar levels in balance. Healthy blood sugar levels prevent extreme hunger pangs so you’re never stuck on a ‘cravings cycle.’
