What Exactly are Bioidentical Hormones?

Posted: December 5, 2011

“Simply put, Bioidentical hormones are medications that provide an exact chemical match to hormones that your body creates,” says Shawna Stephan, P.A.-C of Aguirre Specialty Care. Shawna specializes in women’s medicine and has extensive experience finding solutions for women with hormonal problems. Bioidentical hormones are manufactured in the lab to have the same molecular structure as the hormones made by your own body. Often they are made from yams or soy. By contrast, synthetic hormones are intentionally different. Pharmaceutical companies can’t patent a bioidentical structure, so they invent synthetic hormones.

Shawna prescribes bioidentical hormones for menopausal, perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. During their initial consultation, Shawna and her patients will discuss, in detail, their medical history and the unique concerns each patient experiences. Blood tests are taken to check thyroid levels, DHEA and other related issues. Once a patient begins her personal plan, she will begin to feel improvement in as little as two weeks and will feel dramatic improvement soon thereafter. Shawna explains, “With bioidenticals, we get all of these factors working properly again and suddenly my patients feel refreshed. Many tell me they feel a sense of well being they have missed for many years.”

Many times Bioidenticals are prescribed in the form of a cream that you can apply to yourself regularly.
