Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS)

If you’ve been diagnosed with overactive bladder (OAB), you may be a candidate for a non-surgical overactive bladder treatment called percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS).

PTNS is a nonsurgical treatment for overactive bladder that helps improve:

  • Urinary urgency
  • Urinary frequency
  • Urgency incontinence

Similar to acupuncture, PTNS is a simple treatment that uses a slim needle to stimulate the tibial nerve in the ankle. Once stimulated, the tibial nerve sends impulses to the spine to block signals from the bladder and prevent bladder spasms. PTNS involves a series of 12 weekly treatments, followed by monthly treatments to maintain your improvements.

FAQ: PTNS for Overactive Bladder in Denver, CO

Is PTNS painful?
PTNS is a non-invasive and well-tolerated treatment that may feel similar to a pulsing and/or tingling sensation in the foot.

Is PTNS FDA approved for overactive bladder?
Yes! PTNS was approved by the FDA in 2011.

How effective is PTNS?
In clinical studies, PTNS has shown success rates between 50 to 80 percent.

When will I see results?
For your best results, a series of 12 initial treatments is essential. You should start noticing improvements in your bladder control within five to seven weeks after starting treatment.

Is PTNS right for me?
PTNS is an extremely safe and low-risk treatment that’s suitable for many women and men with overactive bladder. However, PTNS is not suitable for people with the following contraindications:

  • Having an implantable defibrillator
  • Tibial nerve damage
